In 1705, English optician, Edward Scarlett opened 'The Old Spectacle Shop' in Dean Street, Soho, and in 1727 he invented the contemporary spectacle frame.

Scarlett abbreviated his first name to Ed. in the newspaper advertisements of the time, and three centuries later, the brand continues to celebrate both his life and the district of London in which he made his name.
